This report, broken into the nine categories of environmental stewardship work, illustrates Ascension's aim to create healthcare without waste through sustainable practices with environmental, financial and social benefit. Doing the ‘right thing’ for our community’s environmental health aligns closely with doing the ‘safe thing’ for patients, staff and visitors.

Ascension sponsors the Environmental Stewardship Program in partnership with Medxcel. Multi-disciplinary Green Teams integrated into Environment of Care committees within our health ministries, extending the initiative’s reach in order to optimize efficiency and sustainability.

Healthcare waste occurs when we have too much of a particular item entering a facility, requiring that item to be safely disposed of at the end of its useful life. This can be energy, water, food or supplies. The logical first step, then, is source reduction. We should aim to move away from the “Take, Use, Dispose” mentality and move to a new mantra of “Reduce, Reduce, Reduce.” Moving forward, we can aspire to the values of the circular economy – Reuse, Recycle, Repair, Restore, Regenerate.

In November 2017, Anthony R. Tersigni, EdD, FACHE, President and Chief Executive Officer, Ascension joined with 165 leaders from Catholic organizations in signing a letter to the President and Congress to urge U.S. leadership for international climate negotiations, science, and finance. When asked why he felt inspired to sign the letter, Dr. Tersigni responded, “It was important to reiterate Ascension’s commitment to meet the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.”

As described in a reflection from the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, we show our respect for the Creator by our stewardship of creation. Care for the earth is not just an Earth Day slogan, it is a requirement of our faith. We are called to protect people and the planet, living our faith in relationship with all of God’s creation. This environmental challenge has fundamental moral and ethical dimensions that cannot be ignored.

The Ascension Environmental Stewardship Program connects with the Catholic value of stewardship by providing financial, environmental and human benefit in our programs.
